Reducing Your Toxic Load: Clean Beauty at Catalyst

Odds are you won’t get through a session at Catalyst without someone asking you what you had for breakfast or what you will be eating post workout. As a society we have become obsessed with clean eating and detoxification. We choose organic produce whenever possible and avoid packaged foods because we cannot pronounce half of the items on the ingredients list. We spend a third of our income on green juices and fancy blenders. We experiment going wheat-free, gluten-free, dairy-free. We are all hyper aware of the importance of what we are putting into our bodies: now we need to start paying attention to what we put onto our bodies.

The skin is the largest organ of the human body. Everything that comes in contact with your skin is absorbed into your system. The detergent residue on your clothing, your deodorant, body lotion, nail polish, sunscreen, makeup, perfume, hairspray: everything. These products, if purchased conventionally, contain dyes, fragrances, preservatives, heavy metals, tanners, inks, alcohols – a dangerous chemical cocktail that does not (and should not) exist in nature.  These items build up within your body. Every single one of us uses self-care products on a daily basis. That means that we are coming in direct contact with these chemical ingredients 365 days of the year. Some of these toxins have not existed for very long: we have no idea what the long term effects may be if we continue to expose ourselves day in and day out.

We need to start viewing our beauty products the same way we view our food. We should be reading labels and asking questions. When your favorite shampoo runs out consider replacing it with a natural alternative. Same goes for your skin care, makeup, laundry detergent and at-home cleaning supplies. Some environmental toxins cannot be avoided but we have full control over what we put in and on our bodies.
